Weekend of November 16-17th 2024, Richmond, British Colombia
--
GG Weightlifting sent four lifters to the 2024 Western Canadian Weightlifting Championships and coached a few friends of the team along the way.
Audrey Hillman started the weekend off in the 49kg category making a 65kg snatch and a hard-fought 75kg clean & jerk for a 13kg personal best total of 140kg. This gets her above the marker for U20 Commonwealth championships and senior nationals.
Anna Trieu came up next in the 59kg category with a 56kg snatch and a 68kg clean & jerk for a 5kg PR total of 124kg. This meet fell in the middle of Anna's wrestling season, as she is a dual-sport athlete for the University of Alberta Pandas. Despite a nagging knee and elbow injury from the wrestling season she still walked away with a silver in the junior division and a bronze in the senior division.
Scarlet Camilleri followed in the 71kg category with a 73kg snatch and 93kg clean & jerk making a 166kg total to claim silver in the junior division and 5th place in a stacked senior division.
Miles Kent rounded out the pack in the 81kg class. Unfortunately, Miles didn't make a total, but he certainly didn't go down without a fight, giving max effort to every attempt. Miles is in the first year of a Masters of Applied Math so some school events had to take precedence over training before this competition, but we're eager to take some lessons learned for the future!
Friends of the team Fran Yip, Jon Chui, and Jaser Alkafry also competed, all earning medals in their respective categories.
