Some common questions...
What is Olympic Weightlifting? Weightlifting is a sport in which athletes compete to see how can lifted the higest combined weight between two major lifts: the snatch, and the clean & jerk Here's a quick reel from Squat University with an example: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ZQGtaDSbu9E
How does a competition work? During a competition, each athlete is allowed three attempts in each lift. For each lift, the highest weight successfully lifted during a single lift results in their total score for that individual lift. Then, the two total scores from the two lifts are combined, and the competitor with the highest overall total is the winner of the competition. Competition is divided up in weight categories, so that athletes are competing against other athletes of a similar bodyweight.
Is competing required? Yes, competing is expected. While not every single competition available is required, espeically for young athletes sampling multiple sports, this program is designed for athletes looking to compete in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting.
What equipment do I need? You'll need a pair of weightlifting shoes -- you won't need this to get started, but it will be something that's a must-have if you want to continue long-term. There are some other smaller additional accessories, like a belt, knee sleeves, and wrist wraps, which can all help with increase safety and stability in training.
What levels of competition are there? Competition starts with in-house mock competitions (typically one Friday per month), then to local open competitions, and Provincial championships. Athletes that qualify for higher levels of competition, such as National Championships or various international levels of competition and training camps, will have access to travel opportunities.
How do I know if this program is for me? Weightlifting is a great sport for individuals who want to compete in an individual sport, but who also enjoy training along side other athletes with similar goals. A background in other technical-aesthetic sports like gymnastics or cheerleading is a great asset!
